Cheap Tax Agent Near Me: Finding Affordable Help (2026)

Find a tax agent - accountant meeting a client in an office

Searching for a cheap tax agent near you makes sense. A tax return is a yearly cost, and nobody wants to overpay for it. But the cheapest option is not always the one that costs you least.

This guide covers how to find an affordable registered tax agent for your 2025-26 return, how to check them on the TPB register, why agent fees are deductible, what the lodgment program is worth, and the red flags to avoid. It was checked against Tax Practitioners Board guidance and ATO pages on 7 October 2026.

It is for employees, students, sole traders and families who want help without a big bill. For a deeper look at qualifications and questions to ask, read our guide to finding a registered tax agent in Australia.

Key takeaways

  • Only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your return. Check them on the TPB register.
  • The TPB register can search for practitioners up to 75 km from your location.
  • Agent fees are a deductible cost of managing tax affairs, claimed in the year you pay them.
  • Join an agent’s list by 31 October 2026 and most individuals get until 15 May 2027 to lodge.
  • Earning $70,000 or less? The ATO Tax Help program is free from July to October.
  • Red flags: promises of unusually large refunds, asking for your myGov password, contact only through social media.

What does a registered tax agent do?

A registered tax agent prepares and lodges your return, advises on what you can claim and deals with the ATO for you. They are registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). Registration conditions and any sanctions are published on the TPB register.

The ATO is clear that registered tax agents are the only people who can charge a fee for preparing and lodging tax returns. Anyone else charging you is operating outside the law.

How do I check an agent is registered?

Use the TPB register. According to the TPB help page, you can search by name, business name or registration number, filter by suburb or state, or use the location search to find practitioners up to 75 km from you.

The register shows:

  • Registration number and expiry date.
  • Conditions that limit the services they can provide.
  • Sanctions, which stay on the register for at least five years from when they take effect.
  • Business address, if the practitioner has chosen to publish it.

Is a tax agent fee tax deductible?

Yes. The ATO lists lodging your return through a registered tax agent as a cost of managing your tax affairs. So is tax advice from a recognised adviser and travel to meet them. You generally claim the fee in the year you pay it.

That means a fee paid for your 2025-26 return in late 2026 shows up as a deduction in your 2026-27 return. At a 30% marginal rate plus the 2% Medicare levy, every $100 of fee reduces tax by $32, per ATO resident tax rates.

What is the lodgment program worth?

Self-lodgers must lodge by 31 October. Most agents run a lodgment program that lets clients lodge later, but the ATO says you need to contact them before 31 October to be included.

For 2025-26 returns, most individuals on an agent program are due 15 May 2027. Earlier dates apply if you have prior-year returns outstanding or your latest return showed tax of $20,000 or more. The ATO has also said in its newsroom that agents must add new clients by 31 October 2026, not the next business day. Our tax return due dates guide has the full list.

Worked example: what Raj gets from using an agent

Raj earns $80,000 in 2025-26 and has a rental property. He contacts a registered agent on 20 October 2026 and is added to their client list before 31 October.

Time: his due date moves from 31 October 2026 to 15 May 2027. That is 196 more days to gather rental records.

Tax: he pays the agent’s fee in December 2026, so it is claimed in his 2026-27 return. His income stays in the 30% bracket, so each $100 of fee saves $100 x (30% + 2%) = $32, and the after-tax cost of each $100 is $68.

If Raj had waited until November, he would have missed the program date and been lodging late.

What red flags should I watch for?

The TPB has warned about unregistered preparers who are often unqualified and uninsured. Watch for anyone who:

  • Promises an unusually large refund before seeing your records.
  • Asks for your myGov password – never share it with anyone, including an agent.
  • Only contacts you through social media and has no checkable registration.
  • Encourages claims you are not entitled to. You remain responsible for any ATO penalties.
  • Will not tell you how much the work will cost. The TPB suggests discussing fees, refund destination and timing upfront.

A registered agent links to your ATO record through their own systems. If you are setting up access yourself, see our guide to linking myGov to the ATO.

How can I keep the cost down?

  • Come prepared: bring income statements, receipts and a WFH hours record. Our tax return checklist lists what to gather.
  • Ask for the fee structure upfront: the TPB says this is one of the things to discuss before work starts.
  • Check what you can claim first: the ATO’s deductions you can claim pages help you sort records before the appointment.
  • Use an agent who knows your situation: students and visa holders may need advice on a Medicare levy exemption, and tradies on tools and vehicles.

Rule of thumb: Check the TPB register before you hand over any documents. Registered, transparent about fees and never asking for your myGov password – that is the minimum.

Common mistakes when choosing a cheap tax agent

  • Picking on price alone: missed deductions or errors can cost more than the fee saved.
  • Not checking registration: it takes a minute on the TPB register.
  • Calling an agent after 31 October: you miss the lodgment program date for that year.
  • Forgetting to claim last year’s fee: it is deductible in the year you paid it.
  • Sharing myGov sign-in details: a registered agent does not need them.

FAQ about finding a cheap tax agent

What is the cheapest way to lodge a tax return?

Lodging yourself through myTax costs nothing. If you earn $70,000 or less, the ATO Tax Help program offers free help from trained volunteers between July and October. A registered tax agent charges a fee, but it is deductible and can come with a later lodgment date. Which option is best depends on how complex your return is.

Are cheap tax agents safe?

A low fee is not a problem in itself. What matters is registration. Only registered tax agents can charge a fee for preparing and lodging returns, and you can confirm registration, conditions and any sanctions on the TPB register. Unregistered preparers are often uninsured, and you remain responsible for any ATO penalties on your return.

Can I claim my tax agent fee?

Yes. The ATO lists lodging your return through a registered tax agent as a cost of managing your tax affairs. You claim it in the income year you pay it, so a fee paid in November 2026 is claimed in your 2026-27 return. Travel to meet your agent can also be deductible.

How do I find a registered agent near me?

The TPB register has a location search that shows registered practitioners up to 75 km from you. You can also search by name, business name or registration number and filter by suburb or state. Check the registration status and expiry date, and whether any conditions or sanctions are listed.

Is it too late to use an agent for my 2025-26 return?

You need to be on the agent’s client list by 31 October 2026 to get their lodgment program date, which for most individuals is 15 May 2027. The ATO has said this cut-off does not move to the next business day, even though 31 October falls on a Saturday this year. After that date an agent can still lodge, but late.
