TFN With Only One Name: Single-Name Applicant Guide (2026)

TFN First Name Only Issue 2025 – Single-Name Passport Guide

Your passport shows one name. The TFN application asks for a family name and a first given name, and both are compulsory. What do you type? Get it wrong and your tax, super and myGov records can stop matching.

This guide explains how single-name applicants (people with a mononym) can approach a tax file number application in 2026, what the ATO form requires, how Services Australia records a single name, and how to fix a name the ATO recorded incorrectly. We checked each point against the ATO application help page, the ATO page on updating your name and a Services Australia operational guideline.

It is written for new migrants, international students and working holiday makers whose passports show a single name. For the general steps of getting or finding a TFN, see our guide to finding your tax file number.

Key takeaways

  • The ATO online TFN application treats family name and first given name as mandatory.
  • The ATO asks you to enter names exactly as they appear on your passport.
  • The ATO does not publish specific instructions for single names, so ask the ATO before submitting if the form will not accept your name.
  • Services Australia records a single name in the surname field, with the first name left blank.
  • Without a TFN within 28 days, your employer must withhold 47% from your pay.
  • A name recorded wrongly can be fixed online, by phone or with a paper form.

Why is a single name a problem for a TFN application?

Australian government forms are built around two names. The ATO help page for the online TFN application lists the family name and the first given name as mandatory fields, each 1 to 40 characters, and asks you to enter them as they appear on your passport or travel document. It does not say what to do if your passport only has one name.

Your TFN record is later matched against what your employer, super fund, bank and myGov hold. If the ATO record says something different from your visa and passport, you may have trouble verifying your identity or linking services.

How does Services Australia handle a single name?

Services Australia publishes some of its staff procedures. Its operational guideline on legacy proof of identity documents says staff should record a single name in the surname field of a customer record, with the first name field left blank. Staff also need evidence that the person is known by that single name in the community.

This guideline covers Centrelink International Services and some ABSTUDY claims, so it is not an ATO rule. It does show one agency treating a mononym as a surname rather than a given name. The old advice on this page, to put your name in the given name field and leave the family name blank, cannot work on the current ATO online form, because both fields are mandatory.

What should a single-name applicant do?

  • Check your passport and visa – note exactly which field your name appears in and whether any field is blank or shows a placeholder.
  • Match your documents – the ATO asks for names as shown on your passport. Do not invent a surname.
  • Ask before you submit – if the online form will not accept your name as it appears, contact the ATO and ask how it wants the name recorded.
  • Use the right application – the ATO apply for a TFN page lists separate paths for Australian residents, people living outside Australia and visa holders.
  • Keep the same format everywhere – use the same name layout with your employer, bank, super fund and myGov.

What does the passport look like compared with the form?

What your passport showsPoints to check before applying
One name in the surname field, given name blankThe online form also needs a first given name. Ask the ATO how to record it rather than repeating or inventing a name

What happens while you wait for your TFN?

You can start work before your TFN arrives. Give your employer a TFN declaration that says you have applied. If your employer does not have your TFN within 28 days, it must withhold tax at 47% under the PAYG withholding rules. That tax is not lost, but it cuts your pay until it is sorted out.

Worked example: the cost of a TFN delay

Amit arrives on a work visa with a single name on his passport. His online TFN application stalls because of the name fields, and his employer has no TFN after 28 days.

Pay: he earns $1,000 a week. For the next 2 weeks the employer withholds at 47%.

Tax withheld: $1,000 x 47% = $470 a week, or $470 x 2 = $940 for 2 weeks.

Take-home pay: $1,000 – $470 = $530 a week, until his TFN is provided.

The withheld amount counts towards his tax when he lodges a return, but sorting out the name early avoids weeks of reduced pay.

How do you fix a name the ATO recorded wrongly?

The ATO update your name page gives three options:

  • Online through myGov, if your ATO record is linked. A new name needs an Australian identity document, such as a full birth certificate or a change of name certificate.
  • By phone, using the same Australian identity documents.
  • By post with the Change of details for individuals form and a certified identity document. This route accepts foreign passports and foreign identity documents and can take up to 28 days.

For most new arrivals with a foreign passport, the postal form is the practical option. Once your name is fixed, see our guide to linking myGov to the ATO and the ATO page on ATO online services and myGov. If you think someone has used your TFN, read our ATO identity theft guide.

Rule of thumb: Treat your passport as the master record. Whatever layout the ATO accepts, use exactly the same name layout with every employer, bank and super fund.

Common mistakes single-name applicants make

  • Inventing a surname – it creates a record that does not match your passport or visa.
  • Repeating your name – only do this if your passport shows it that way.
  • Submitting and hoping – ask the ATO first if the form will not accept your name.
  • Using different layouts – one format with the employer and another with the bank causes matching problems.
  • Confusing a TFN with an ABN – contractors also need an ABN; see our ABN vs TFN guide and our article on personal services income.

FAQ about TFNs with only one name

Can I get a TFN if I only have one name?

Yes. Having a single name does not stop you getting a TFN. The difficulty is that the ATO online application for foreign passport holders makes both the family name and first given name fields mandatory. If your passport shows one name and the form will not accept it, contact the ATO before submitting rather than guessing.

Should I repeat my name in both fields?

Only if that is how your passport or travel document shows it. The ATO asks you to enter each name exactly as it appears on your passport. Repeating a name that appears once, or inventing a surname, creates a record that does not match your visa and other documents and can cause problems later.

How does Services Australia record a single name?

A published Services Australia operational guideline says a single name is recorded in the surname field with the first name field left blank, supported by evidence that the person is known by that name. That guideline covers proof of identity for certain Centrelink services, but it shows how one Australian agency treats mononyms.

What happens if I start work before my TFN arrives?

You can give your employer a TFN declaration saying you have applied. If your employer does not receive your TFN within 28 days, it must withhold tax at 47% from your pay. The extra tax counts towards your tax bill when you lodge your return, but it reduces your take-home pay in the meantime.

How do I fix my name if the ATO recorded it wrongly?

You can update your name online through myGov if your ATO record is linked, by phone, or by posting the Change of details for individuals form with a certified identity document. The postal route accepts foreign passports and foreign identity documents and can take up to 28 days to process.
